One of my roles in life for the past twenty five years is as a woodlot steward. This, with other outdoor pursuits immerse me into the natural environment, teaching me, and inspiring my work. Wood species such as foraged remnants of American chestnut as well as ash, beech and Eastern hemlock have stories woven into my work. Transposed animal, plant and human composites are the main thematic imagery. Each sculpture has it’s own story. The sculpture process involves a varied order of repeated carving, burning, painting, sanding. This brings chance and serendipity into the woodcarving. It is risky and can lead to discovery, but often leads to ruin. Occasionally, I salvage and incorporate an element of a forgone sculpture onto a current work.
